[EVENT] KURASU Guest Barista
Share
Hello, I'm Rensho Fukui, a roaster at TERRA COFFEE ROASTERS .
Recently, I was invited to KURASU Ebisugawa in Kyoto to provide extractions as a guest barista and hold a cupping workshop.
01|About KURASU

Kurasu is a specialty coffee shop from Kyoto, whose name comes from the Japanese word for "living."
- Started as an online coffee equipment store
- The lineup of equipment is very extensive both in-store and online
- Kurasu Kyoto Stand in front of Kyoto Station, Kurasu Ebisugawa , which handles equipment, and Kurasu Nishijin Roastery in Nishijin
- Overseas expansion to Singapore, Bangkok, Indonesia, and China
The concept of the Ebisugawa store where we were set up this time is "home brew." All the equipment in the store is made up of household machines. For cafe lattes, we extract espresso with an AeroPress and heat the milk with a household steamer.
In addition, the April Dripper that we regularly use at TERRA can also be purchased at KURASU.
02|Event details

KURASU's roaster, Takuya Otsuka , is a friend who participated in the Origin Trip to Colombia with me in April this year. This collaborative event was made possible after we purchased Carlos Soto 's coffee together there.
TERRA and KURASU roasted and extracted "Colombia" coffee produced by Colombian producer Carlos Soto , and we compared the taste of the resulting coffee.
This lot is a special coffee that won 5th place at the Colombia Washed Coffee Festival . I still vividly remember the juiciness and mellow acidity like yogurt when I tasted it for the first time there.
Differences in taste (tasting notes)
- TERRA: Tropical and bright acidity like papaya. Delicate and clean.
- KURASU: Gentle acidity and sweetness like pear or compote apple.
TERRA is described as orange/papaya/peach/black tea , while KURASU is described as floral/blood orange/pear/peach/black tea , but when I tried them I found the differences to be greater than I expected.
Even with the same batch, the roaster's approach can make all the difference . It was an experience that really brought home to me the profound depths of coffee.
03 | Cupping Workshop

After closing time, we held a cupping workshop with the theme "Taste the Difference – Experience the Flavor of Coffee."
- 5 types of KURASU
- TERRA 5 types
- A total of 10 varieties were compared blindly
The participants ranged from coffee lovers to active baristas, making it a very lively event.
The most popular style was Peru Geisha (Washed) . In regular workshops, natural and anaerobic styles are popular, but I was surprised to see how preferences change depending on the location and atmosphere .
My personal favorite coffee
Honduras Pacas – A gentle acidity reminiscent of mandarin oranges and apricots, a gorgeous aroma, and a black tea-like aftertaste. It was a drink I wanted to drink every day .
04|Finally

This time we introduced the guest barista and cupping event at KURASU Ebisugawa .
TERRA will continue to carry Carlos Soto coffee, so please look forward to it.
If you find the same coffee at another shop, try comparing the two. You'll be amazed at how different the coffee is, even though it's made from the same beans .
notice

TERRA regularly holds cupping sessions and workshops, mainly at our Esaka store. The latest information can be found on our Instagram and NEWS pages.
We look forward to your participation.
