This batch, made from Bourbon grapes grown at altitudes of 1,800-2,100m and refined using the honey process, features a well-balanced flavor with bright, mellow acidity reminiscent of mandarin orange and apricot, layered with a gentle sweetness like honey. As it cools, the floral aroma becomes more prominent, and the clean, pleasant finish lingers.
We recommend pairing it with scones containing citrus peel, or baked goods made with apricots and honey. It pairs perfectly with light, sweet and sour sweets, making it the perfect cup for an afternoon coffee break.
[Production background]
This lot was produced by the Dukunde Kawa Musasa Cooperative, which was established in 2000. Located in the Gakenke district of northern Rwanda, the cooperative has over 1,000 members, 80% of whom are women. The cooperative owns three washing stations: Ruli, Mbilima, and Nkara, and this lot was processed at the largest of these, Ruli Station.
The fully ripe cherries are hand-picked and then transported to a collection point within an hour, where they are sorted by the farmers themselves before being sent to the washing station. There, they undergo a rigorous process of carefully drying on African beds, sorting by specific gravity, fermenting, and washing. Under this strict management system, the cooperative has been awarded the Cup of Excellence seven times, and its commitment to quality is recognized worldwide.
[Regional characteristics]
The Gakenke region is located at a particularly high altitude in Rwanda, and receives an abundant annual rainfall of 1,300 to 1,400 mm, which allows the cherries to ripen slowly. This results in a coffee that is complex, deep, and full-bodied with sweetness.
This lot is a fragrant and refined drink that perfectly combines the rich terroir with a meticulous production process.
