About Gatura Coffee Factory

Established in 1975, Gatura Coffee Factory is a historic coffee processing station located in Nyeri, Kenya. It originally operated under the Mukurwe-ini Farmers Cooperative Society Limited, one of the region's larger coffee cooperatives.

Over the decades, the factory has experienced several cooperative reorganisations. Today, Gatura operates independently, continuing its longstanding connection with the local coffee-growing community.

Cooperative History

In 2000, the Mukurwe-ini Farmers Cooperative Society Limited was divided, leading to the establishment of Muhito Farmers Cooperative Society, comprising four coffee factories.

In 2004, these four factories were reunited under Rumukia Farmers Cooperative Society Limited. The cooperative operated for approximately 21 years before eventually dissolving due to significant financial debt.

Following these changes, Gatura Coffee Factory now operates as an independent organisation, continuing its own chapter in Kenyan coffee production.

Name & Heritage

The name "Gatura" comes from the local Kikuyu language and means "small village."

Its origins trace back to the colonial era, when local communities were brought together to live in designated settlements. The strong sense of unity and connection formed during this period has continued through generations.

Today, the name Gatura reflects both the history of the land and the enduring spirit of its community.
